This Occupational Skills Award (OSA) prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians and other health care professionals, to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of intrusive procedures. Includes instruction in basic vascular anatomy and physiology, blood physiology, skin puncture techniques, venipuncture, venous specimen collection and handling, safety and sanitation procedures, and applicable standards and regulations.

Students enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technology Associate of Applied Science degree program are encouraged to complete PLAB 1160 during the second semester of the program to establish eligibility for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) examination administered by the National Healthcareer Association.
All students enrolled in a Clinical Medical Assisting pathway are encouraged to complete PLAB 1160 to establish eligibility for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) examination administered by the National Healthcareer Association.
