Alternate Operations During Campus Closure

In the event of an emergency or announced campus closure due to a natural disaster or pandemic, it may be necessary for Panola College to move to altered operations. During this time, Panola College may opt to continue delivery of instruction through methods that include, but are not limited to: online learning management system (CANVAS), online conferencing, email messaging, and/or an alternate schedule. It is the responsibility of the student to monitor Panola College's website (www.panola.edu) for instructions about continuing courses remotely, CANVAS for each class for course-specific communication, and Panola College email for important general information.

Class Attendance

Regular and punctual attendance of classes and laboratories is required of all students. When a student has been ill or absent from class for approved extracurricular activities, he or she should be allowed, as far as possible, to make up for the missed work. If a student has not actively participated by the census date, they will be dropped by the instructor for non-attendance. This policy applies to courses that are in-person, online, hybrid, and hyflex.

Attendance in online courses is determined by submission of an assignment or participation in an activity. According to federal guidelines, simply logging into a distance learning course without participating in an academic assignment does not constitute attendance. Distance learning is defined as when a majority (more than 50%) of instruction occurs when the instructor and students are in separate physical locations. Students must engage in an academic activity prior to the course census date. 

When an instructor feels that a student has been absent to such a degree as to invalidate the learning experience, the instructor may recommend to the Vice President of Instruction that the student be withdrawn from the course. Instructors may seek to withdraw students for non-attendance after they have accumulated the following number of absences: 

Fall or spring semesters: 

3 or more class meeting times per week - 5 absences

2 class meeting times per week - 3 absences

1 class meeting per week -  2 absences

The student is responsible for seeing that he or she has been officially withdrawn from a class. A student who stops attendance in a class without officially withdrawing from that class will be given a failing grade; consequently, the student must follow official withdrawal procedures in the Admissions/Records Office.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Course Policy

Use of generated AI Permitted under some classroom circumstances with permission.

There are situations throughout the course where you may be asked to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to explore how they can be used. Outside of those circumstances, you should not use AI tools to generate content that will end up in any student work (assignments, activities, discussion responses, etc.). In such cases for Option #2, no more than 25% of the student work should be generated by AI. Use of any AI-generated content in this course without the instructor’s consent qualifies as academic dishonesty and violates Panola College’s standards of academic integrity.

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with computer and math applications that are used in the petroleum industry.

Course Content

A general description of lecture/discussion topics included in this course are listed in the Learning Objectives / Specific Course Objectives sections of this syllabus.

Students in all sections of this course will be required to do the following:

  1. Students will submit an assignment each week through the digital software assigned: EWA for Math while doing that portion of the class. Computer assignments will use Microsoft Office 13 software. Each assignment stresses features and functions common to computer or math applications including creating formulas, formatting worksheets, working with multiple worksheets, creating charts, sorting and filtering lists, graphic presentations, word documents have etc.
  2. Students will use practice resources available and submit weekly quizzes through assigned software or through Canvas.
  3. Students will complete two hands-on, application exams using assigned software in the presence of a testing proctor if an internet class student or in class.
Methods of Instruction/Course Format/Delivery

This course is offered in traditional, hybrid and Internet classes and students will have access to courses via Canvas. Students in the traditional class will meet regularly for lecture. Students in the Internet class will be required to take quizzes and exams at an approved testing facility or, they may also be administered by the instructor. Students in hybrid classes will have both in class and online assignments. Resources for this course, provided through Canvas, include the following Sections in Canvas…

  • Announcements and Recent Activities List: Instructor Announcements
  • Inbox: Email (to communicate with instructor and classmates inside Canvas)

  • Other sections, as assigned by the Instructor: Students in both the traditional and Internet classmates should use the People feature within Canvas (includes Canvas Email) to communicate with the instructor. Using Canvas Email located in the “In Box” menu, gives the student access to the instructor and other classmates without having to remember or type email addresses; the student just selects a name from the list. The instructor will attempt to respond to all Canvas emails within 24 hours. For example, if a student makes an appointment with the instructor through Canvas email to take an exam, the instructor will reply to the student’s Canvas email – if the instructor does not reply within the time needed, call the instructor at his or her office. Please, always include in the subject line of the Canvas email, the student’s name, course number and course section number.

      The following items will be assigned during the semester and used to calculate the student’s final
      grade:

 

      ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION

 

Students will need to sign in and submit an assignment within first week to be counted present and attending. 

 

     Homework

 

There will be weekly homework assignments covering that week’s content. Homework will generally
consist of recreating documents, slide shows, or spreadsheets as demonstrated in the lecture. Homework
from the math section will consist of problems that must be solved, similar to the examples given in the
lecture.

 

      EXAMS

 

Exams covering Microsoft Office will consist of two parts: a multiple-choice section and a practical
application. The multiple-choice section will generally consist of True/False, Multiple Choice, Matching,
and/or Fill-in-the-Blank questions. The practical section will be recreating a document, slide show, or
spreadsheet given by the instructor.
The exam covering the math section will be comprehensive and will consist of problems covered on
each of the math quizzes.

 

 Assignments:

 

Students are provided with step-by-step instructions for completing each assignment.

Assignments may include laboratory exercises, case studies, team-group assignments and other

instructor assigned work. The student may be required to compile and turn in a notebook containing the completed performance sheets along with the student’s tabulated data or as otherwise directed by the instructor. Throughout the semester there will be lab exercises both virtual and hands-on. Students will be assessed on his or her ability to complete the task with minimal assistance.

Grading Notes and Course Policies

Late Work: All assignments are due by the dates listed in Canvas and on the course calendar. A 5% penalty will be applied for each day an assignment is late. Students who miss an assignment because of an approved absence must contact the instructor for further instructions.

Missed Exams: Exams missed for a legitimate reason must be completed before midterm or final grades are reported, as applicable. The student is responsible for contacting the instructor and scheduling the make-up exam. The instructor reserves the right to change the format of any make-up exam. Instructors are not required to provide make-up work for an unexcused absence. If make-up work is permitted following an unexcused absence, the instructor may award full or partial credit.

Missed Quizzes: Quizzes missed for a legitimate reason must be completed within one week of the scheduled quiz or by a date established by the instructor. The student is responsible for contacting the instructor and scheduling the make-up quiz. The instructor reserves the right to change the format of any make-up quiz. Instructors are not required to provide make-up work for an unexcused absence. If make-up work is permitted following an unexcused absence, the instructor may award full or partial credit.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. A student who misses more than 10% of the semester without a valid excuse may be withdrawn from the course at the instructor’s discretion. A student who arrives 30 or more minutes late or leaves before the class is dismissed will be counted absent. The instructor reserves the right to deduct points for any absence that is not supported by a legitimate excuse.

Missed Laboratory Exercises: The instructor will designate one day during the semester for students to make up laboratory exercises missed because of a legitimate absence. Instructors are not required to provide make-up laboratory work for an unexcused absence. If make-up work is permitted following an unexcused absence, the instructor may award full or partial credit.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is the appropriation, purchase, receipt as a gift, or acquisition by any other means of another person’s work and the unacknowledged submission or incorporation of that work as one’s own. Papers submitted through Canvas may be reviewed using Turnitin. The instructor reserves the right to deduct points or impose other appropriate academic penalties based on the results.

Cheating: Cheating on an examination or assignment includes, but is not limited to:

a. Copying from another student’s work.
b. Using materials not authorized by the person administering the assessment.
c. Collaborating with or seeking assistance from another student without permission.
d. Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting all or part of an unadministered examination.
e. Transporting or removing all or part of an unadministered examination without authorization.
f. Substituting for another student or allowing another student to substitute for oneself.
g. Bribing another person to obtain an unadministered examination or information about it.
h. Using unauthorized electronic devices, applications, websites, artificial intelligence tools, or other resources.

A student observed cheating will be dismissed from class immediately, counted absent, and assigned a zero for the examination or assignment involved.

Safety: Students participating in laboratory exercises must bring and wear all personal protective equipment required by the instructor. A student who fails to follow safety requirements will receive one warning. Continued violation of safety rules will result in the student being dismissed from class and counted absent.

Class Conduct: Cell phones must be turned off during class. A student who must receive an urgent call should notify the instructor in advance and leave the classroom before taking the call. Cell phones and other unauthorized electronic devices are prohibited during testing. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. A student who engages in disruptive behavior will receive one warning. If the behavior continues, the student will be dismissed from class and counted absent.

Nonparticipation: Students who have not completed any assignments by the 12th class day may be dropped from the course.

Mandatory Meetings: Attendance at certain mandatory meetings held outside the regularly scheduled class dates or times may be required for course credit. To avoid a grade penalty, students must email the instructor documentation supporting any valid absence.

Student Handbook: All students must comply with the policies and requirements established in the Panola College School of Energy & Welding Student Handbook. Each student must review and sign the handbook acknowledgment once per semester.
