Description
A single-semester course. This course is not acceptable in the ADN, HIT,(remove HIT) or OTA programs. Study of the structure and function of human anatomy, including the neuroendocrine, integumentary, musculoskeletal, digestive, urinary, reproductive and circulatory systems. Content may be either integrated or specialized.

Alternate Operations During Campus Closure

Class Attendance

Regular and punctual attendance of classes and laboratories is required of all students. When a student has been ill or absent from class for approved extracurricular activities, he or she should be allowed, as far as possible, to make up for the missed work. If a student has not actively participated by the census date, they will be dropped by the instructor for non-attendance. This policy applies to courses that are in-person, online, hybrid, and hyflex.

Attendance in online courses is determined by submission of an assignment or participation in an activity. According to federal guidelines, simply logging into a distance learning course without participating in an academic assignment does not constitute attendance. Distance learning is defined as when a majority (more than 50%) of instruction occurs when the instructor and students are in separate physical locations. Students must engage in an academic activity prior to the course census date. 

When an instructor feels that a student has been absent to such a degree as to invalidate the learning experience, the instructor may recommend to the Vice President of Instruction that the student be withdrawn from the course. Instructors may seek to withdraw students for non-attendance after they have accumulated the following number of absences: 

Fall or spring semesters: 

3 or more class meeting times per week - 5 absences

2 class meeting times per week - 3 absences

1 class meeting per week -  2 absences

The student is responsible for seeing that he or she has been officially withdrawn from a class. A student who stops attendance in a class without officially withdrawing from that class will be given a failing grade; consequently, the student must follow official withdrawal procedures in the Admissions/Records Office.

Please note: Health Science and Cosmetology courses may require more stringent attendance policies based on their accreditation agencies. Please see the addendum and/or program handbook for further information concerning attendance.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Course Policy

No use of Generative AI permitted.

This option assumes that all work submitted by students will be generated by the students themselves, whether they are working individually or in groups. Students should not have another person or entity do the writing of any portion of an assignment, which includes hiring a person or a company to write assignments and/or using artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT. Use of any AI-generated content in this course qualifies as academic dishonesty and violates Panola College’s standards of academic integrity.

Instructional Goals and Purposes

Introductory Anatomy and Physiology is a one semester foundation course that surveys human anatomy and physiology. This course is geared toward students who are pursuing career in the allied health fields or who wish to increase their success rate in BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402. This course does not substitute for Biology 2401 or 2402 unless specified by your program director. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an in-depth study of the anatomy and physiology (structure and function) of the human body. In so doing, the student will be educated in the core components/college student learning outcomes (listed above) and the course learning outcomes (listed below).

Learning Outcomes

After studying all materials and resources presented in the course, the student will be able to:

Methods of Instruction/Course Format/Delivery

This course is offered in a variety of formats: face to face, hybrid, and online. The course typically includes lecture, class discussion, reading assignments, laboratory performance, web-based assignments including and web-based tutorials.

Course Grade

The grading scale for this course is as follows:

  • A=90-100%
  • B=80-89%
  • C=70-79%
  • D=60-69%
  • F=< 60%

Lecture (70% of course grade)

  • Lecture Quizzes – 10% of lecture grade
  • Mastering A&P Quizzes – 10% of lecture grade
  • Exams – 60% of lecture grade
  • Final exam – 20% of lecture grade.
    • A student can have the final exam can replace the lowest lecture exam grade by participating in lecture activities, and not exceeding the college’s attendance policy (see below). A missed exam is recorded as a zero and must be made-up. The comprehensive final cannot replace a missed exam score of zero

Lab (30% of course grade)

  • Lab Quizzes – 20% of lab grade
  • Lab Exercises – 40% of lab grade
  • Lab Practicals – 40% of lab grade.
    • A student can earn up to 2 points on their final lab average by active and studious participating in lab activities and not exceeding the college’s attendance policy.

Assessment:

     Quiz:  Missed quizzes due to legitimate reasons should be rescheduled with the professor within one week of the scheduled quiz.  It is the responsibility of the student to schedule makeup quizzes.  Makeup quizzes will consist of fill in the blank questions.

     Mastering A&P Quizzes: Multiple attempts per question are allowed.  No extensions are allowed on these quizzes

     Exams:  Missed examinations due to legitimate reasons should be rescheduled with the professor within one week of the scheduled examination.  A makeup exam will consist of fill in the blank questions.  It is the responsibility of the student to schedule makeup quizzes. A student will not be permitted more than one makeup exam.

Final Exam: Missed final exam due to legitimate reasons should be rescheduled with the professor within one week of the scheduled examination.  The makeup exam may consist of multiple-choice, matching, fill in the blank and essay questions.  It is the responsibility of the student to schedule a makeup final exam.

Course requirements:  The student is responsible for attending all lectures, laboratories, and completing all assigned lecture/lab assignments/examinations.  Be sure to complete the participation activities on time.  Each completed on-time participation activity is worth 1 participation point.  If a participation activity is turned in late, then you will only receive 0.5 participation points.  If the participation point activity is incomplete, and on-time, then you will only receive 0.5 participation points.  The participation activities count for attendance purposes for the online part of the course.  When the professor feels that the student has been absent to such a degree as to invalidate the learning experience, the professor may recommend to the Vice President of Instructional Affairs that the student be dropped from the course.  The professor may drop the student for attendance deficiencies after they have accumulated the following number of absences:

4 participation points per semester

The student is responsible for taking notes, reading and outlining course materials, and being prepared for lecture and laboratory responsibilities.

It is the responsibility of the student to complete and turn in all course work on the scheduled dates. Thirty points or more will be taken away for any assignment turned in late.  Regardless of any situation, the professor should be contacted ASAP to develop an alternate schedule.

Academic integrity is an important value in student development. Plagiarism and cheating are not allowed.  Cheating is defined as unauthorized help on an examination, practical or assigned course material.  A student must not receive from any other student or give to any other student any information, answers, or help during an exam, in-class quiz, and practical.  A student must not “steal” the answers from an unsuspecting student during an exam, in-class quiz, and practical.  A student must not use any sources for answers during the exam (including, but not limited to: notes, books or electronic devices) without prior authorization from the professor.  A student must not obtain exam question illegally, tamper with the exam/in-class quiz/practical questions, nor change the results of an exam/in-class quiz/practical after it has been graded.  All cheating infractions will result in a grade of “0” for the assignment.  A student will fail the class upon their second cheating offense.  Students shall have the right to contest a cheating claim.  The appeals process is specifically defined in the student handbook.

Using LockDown Browser for Online Exams

This course requires the use of LockDown Browser for online exams. Watch this short video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser and the optional webcam feature (which may be required for some exams).

To take an online test, start LockDown Browser and navigate to the exam. (You won't be able to access the exam with a standard web browser.) For additional details on using LockDown Browser, review this Student Quick Start Guide (PDF)

Finally, when taking an online exam, follow these guidelines:

  • Select a location where you are comfortable having a video recording taken of yourself and your workspace environment. This area should also be free of distractions and interruptions.
  • Before starting the test, know how much time is available for it, and that you've allotted sufficient time to complete it.
  • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc. and don't have them within reach.
  • Clear your area of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices.
  • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test.
  • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted

Students testing off-campus must adhere to the following rules:

1.  Dress Appropriately.

     a.  Students must follow dress code outline in the Pathfinder

          i.  Professors have the right not to review exams if a student is inappropriately dressed and can require the student to retake the exam in the testing center.

2.  Take exam at a desk or table location in a quiet area of the house.

     a.  If a student does not have a location like this in the house, the student must contact their professor prior to the exam.

3.  Complete a correct room scan, incomplete room scan can result in professor not reviewing the test and student being required to retake the exam in testing center

     a.  Complete 360 view of room

     b.  View of the desk and surrounding area

     c.  View of the computer/laptop monitor (Student can use a mirror if they have a laptop)

4.  Professors can require additional requirements at their discretion
