Emergency Medical Technology - Basic

(TSI-Waived Program) 

The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergency patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

Upon successful completion of this certificate, students are eligible to take the National Registry (NREMT) certification exam. Upon successful completion of the NREMT exam, students can apply to Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for a Texas EMT certification. This program is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Notes:

A student should take BIOL 2404 if only planning to take EMT and/or the Paramedic Certificate.  

If a student plans to get the Paramedic Associate of Applied Science degree, take BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402 (BIOL 2401 can be taken in place of BIOL 2404 and then do BIOL 2402 with semester 1 of Paramedic.)
