Credit for Prior Learning

Panola College may recognize and award credit for prior learning through Credit by Examination, Credit by Skills Testing, Continuing Education Credit Conversion, International Baccalaureate Diploma, Licensure or Professional Certification, or Verified Industry Experience. A minimum of 25% of a credential must be earned through regular instruction at Panola College. Students may request review for any prior learning through the Admissions Office.

General Policies for Credit for Prior Learning

  • The person desiring credit by examination must be accepted for admission to Panola College. 

  • The Exam Scores must be sent to the Admissions/Records Office and credit will be given if applicable. 

  • The student desiring credit based on the SAT, ACT, AP, or CLEP examinations must be sent to the Admissions/Records Office. 

  • No credit by examination will be allowed for a course after the first class day of the course the student is requesting credit for.

  • A student who has previously received a grade (A, B, C, D, F, W, P, or I) in a course may not receive credit by examination for the same course. 

  • Credits earned by examination will not become a part of the student’s record until the official reporting date of the semester in which they are enrolled. 

Credit by Examination

Panola College offers opportunities for course credit by examination. Results of the following examinations are considered for credit: ACT, College Board Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Subject Examinations, and Institutional Tests - Selected Subject Areas. 

Each college and university has its own policy with respect to credit earned by examination. Any such credit allowed by one institution may not necessarily be accepted at another. 

ACT Scores

A credit of CR will be awarded and added to the transcript for ENGL 1301 with the following minimum scores in the English and reading sections: 

  • 29 

No credit will be awarded if the appropriate score is not achieved in both sections. 

College Board’s Advanced Placement Examination

A credit of CR will be given for the following minimum score: 

Panola College does not award credit for scores attained on the SAT II.

Competencies for Upper-Level Courses

Panola College cannot transfer upper-level course credits for lower-level course requirements. Students that have earned upper-level credit may request credit by exam to meet prerequisite requirements for specific programs at Panola College. For additional information on how to make the request, contact a Panola College Advisor. 

Credit for Technical Skills Testing

In some cases, academic credit may be given for applicable and validated industry experience through skills testing, subject to the evaluation and approval by the Vice President of Instruction, Instructional Dean, Department Chair, and Professor. Students must score at least 75% to receive credit.

International Baccalaureate Dipolma

Panola College will grant a maximum of 24 semester hours within our core curriculum to any entering freshman, who has received an International Baccalaureate diploma. Course credit is given for the IB higher level examinations passed with grades of 4, 5, 6, or 7 with proper documentation. No credit is awarded for subsidiary level courses. Applicants with the IB diploma must provide a completed IB transcript to the Admissions/Records Office prior to enrolling in order to receive credit. Students requesting credit must also complete the applicable form.

Awarding Credit for Continuing Education Units

Panola College students who have successfully completed continuing education (CE) courses offered by Panola College Workforce and Continuing Education could be eligible for equivalent semester course credit pending appropriate Dean approval. Courses eligible for SCH conversion are offered in the Workforce Education Course Manual.  In order to qualify for conversion, the CE course must meet the following criteria:

  1. The actual number of class/lab (contact) hours in the CEU course is comparable to the approved number of contact hours for the SCH WECM equivalent course.

  2. The instructor of the CEU class holds the credentials/experience that would be required of an instructor teaching the SCH equivalent of the WECM course, as defined by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

  3. The course tasks, competencies, and learning outcomes for the CEU course are equivalent to those of the SCH version of the WECM course.

  4.  The course requirements for satisfactory completion of the CEU course are equivalent to those of the SCH version of the WECM course.

  5. Students in the CEU course are evaluated/ assessed comparably to students in the equivalent SCH version of the WECM course.

  6. The student has received a satisfactory (passing) final grade for the CEU course.

Licensure or Professional Certification

Documented, current certifications or licensure equivalent to course outcomes may be assessed for course credit subject to the evaluation and approval by the Vice President of Instruction, Instructional Dean, Department Chair, and Professor. Students requesting credit by licensure or professional certification must present documentation of current certification or licensure.

Verified Industry Experience

A documented demonstration of college-level learning through relevant industry experience may be assessed for course credit, subject to the evaluation and approval by the Vice President of Instruction, Instructional Dean, Department Chair, and Professor.  Students requesting credit for relevant industry experience must present documentation such as a portfolio or resume of past experience, credentials, proof of past employment, job descriptions, work performance, etc.
